Abstract
We introduce the concept of mu - tau symmetry in the lepton sector and summarize different possibilities how to break it. These are direct breaking by modifying the mass matrix, disentangling the contributions from the neutrino and charged lepton sectors to the PMNS matrix, and Planck scale effects vs. renormalization. Leptonic CP violation aspects are crucial for all cases.
