Abstract
During the last years, the behavioral genetic investigation of individual differences has been applied to processes of cognitive aging. In this review, the state of the current theoretical discussion and the results of empirical studies are described. In behavioral genetic studies, genetic models of biological aging are applied to cognitive competencies. The conceptions of genetic and environmental effects can be tested partially, by the available empirical evidence regarding the long-term and genetically based stability of cognitive abilities through adulthood and the individual gene-environment correlations in old age. These results and their theoretical interpretation allow for more focused investigations of the mechanisms involved in psychological adaptation and of the interplay between biological and cognitive aspects of performance.
