Abstract
The rapid oxidative cleavage of C20 fatty acids to give α,β,γ,δ‐unsaturated aldehydes (see scheme) has been observed after damaging unicellular phytoplankton algae (diatomophyceae). This activated chemical defense provides a high concentration of the metabolites in the target organism with low costs for the defending algae.
