Zusammenfassung
Boletopsis grisea, a species highly endangered and included in the Red Lists of several
European countries was reported in Jena for the first time. The discovery of this rare species
motivated us to investigate why the fungus is reported so infrequently. The taxonomic
relationships within the genus Boletopsis are discussed and its occurrence within Germany
described. In contrast to many previous studies, we did not find Boletopsis grisea on a nutrient
poor sandy, but on shallow nitrogen-poor calcareous soil (according to Ellenberg). Thus,
habitat requirements can be extended from poor acidic sandy soils to neutral and even basic
nitrogen poor calcareous soils.
Analysis of soil C/N content indicated an ordinary nitrogen concentration. However, N indicator
values of the plant species growing in the vicinity of the fungus point to a low availability
of nitrogen at the site.
Reports of Boletopsis in Volkenberg (a location close to Würzburg) from 2004-2018 were correlated
with monthly precipitation values. Fruit bodies were registered in this region when
precipitation from March to October exceeded 400 mm.
High pressure liquid chromatography analyses coupled with high-resolution electrospray ionization
mass spectrometry (HPLC-HRESIMS) and subsequent structure analysis using nuclear
magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) revealed the presence of seven previously described terphenyls as main constituents.
