Abstract
Sugars have pathogenic roles in diabetes. In Nature Medicine, Zhang et al. revisit this dogma and show that mannose induces the generation of regulatory T (Treg) cells. The immunoregulatory effect of mannose not only prevented the onset of autoimmune diabetes but also blocked disease progression in new-onset diabetic mice.
