Abstract
I review historical chemical experiments in which the phenomena of self-organisation and pattern formation were first observed. I then review theoretical models for the description of oscillating chemical reactions and reactions with limit-cycle behaviour. Finally I discuss a number of examples of chemical experiments for the explanation of which the concepts of synergetics were of paramount importance.
