Zusammenfassung
In the last third of the nineteenth century, the Teatro La Fenice in Venice found itself in an artistic and organizational crisis. Administrational problems, failed impresarios, and the refusal of the city to pay subsidies all contributed to this. New research highlights the connection of the dire situation of the opera house to the image crisis of the city of Venice, and shows that the eventual destiny of Venice as a tourist spot contributed to an improvement of the state of the Teatro La Fenice.
