Abstract
This study evaluates the influence of time of inundation on the structure of three populations of Salix martiana in whitewater floodplain areas (várzea) of Central Amazônia, through the monitoring of growth, height, diameter and mortality of 411 adult individuals. Selected plants were located in three sites in different position along the inundation gradient. Taller plants with larger diameters were found in the higher positions on the river margins. In the lower positions mortality of individuals appears to be related to the length of the flooding, while in the higher positions, reduction of light intensity owing to shade by taller species is possibly the most important factor
