Abstract
Single crystals of TeI have been prepared by two different methods. X-ray investigations lead to the following cell parameters: a=9.957, b=7.991, , α=104.4, β=90.1, γ=_102.90, Z=8, Dx=5.49g/cm3, possible space groups:P1, P1. These results are in contrast to a previous publication. Two larger crystals have been investigated by Raman and infrared spectroscopy. Some of the zone-center optical phonons seem to be Raman as well as infrared active. Thus we conclude that TeI belongs to the space group P1. Because of its optical properties TeI may be of interest for nonlinear optics.
