Abstract
The use of a variable voltage method to improve the absorption correction for soft x-ray analysis has been studied. It is shown that the sample composition and the absorption correction can be deduced simultaneously, and that matrix-dependent changes to mass absorption coefficients are automatically taken into account. No more than three accelerating voltages need be used, and the method is insensitive to small errors in the shape of phi(rhoz).
