Abstract
A quantitative study of optical properties of a photoreceptor requires a knowledge of its characteristic waveguide parameter V. Previously, neither a direct measurement of V nor its accurate determination has been possible. We determine V in almost intact fly photoreceptors by measuring their birefringence. It is shown that the smaller fly photoreceptors have pronounced waveguide effects for wavelengths greater than 400 nm.
