Abstract
Digital libraries have to deal with both, a tremendous growth in size as well as in functionality. To handle this growth, systems need to be pushed towards more openness, decomposition and entry-points for services on various levels. This paper establishes patterns for service decomposition, collated from productive systems. It thus supports architectural design of large-scale digital libraries, as well as shapes communication between distinct architectures. At the end of this path we see functional interoperability of large-scale digital libraries, and a digital library environment that is shared on multiple levels.
