Abstract
A small Cyclotella species was abundant in the plankton of Lake Kinneret (Israel). This species showed large phenotypic plasticity with morphological characteristics of several known Cyclotella taxa (C. comensis Grunow, C. ocellata Pantocsek, C. kuetzingiana var. planetophora Fricke and var. radiosa Fricke). It represents a polymorphic, sometimes heterovalvate species exhibiting morphological variation in association with the life cycle and with decreasing cell sizes, and differential morphology within the valves of a cell. The name Cyclotella polymorpha sp. nov. is proposed
