Abstract
Abstract The occurrence of the parasitic larvae of 13 species of stream-dwelling water-mites in the insect emergence traps on the Breitenbach in Hessen is recorded for the year 1972. The species behaved differently according to season; spring and summer species could be distinguished. Protzia eximia finds its host (Chironomidae, Simuliidae, Trichoptera) after leaving the water. The other species pass through a phoretic phase first attaching themselves at the pupae. Sperchon setiger parasitized only Simuliidae, the other species, only Chironomidae. When moulting of the insect occurs some species actively move onto it, other are passively dragged through the pupal skin by the emerging adult. The parasitic phase of S. setiger lasts at least 2 days at least. The engorged larvae fell off, whether at that time the host is near water or not.
