Abstract
Abstract The ecology and production biology of juvenile Gammarus fossarum KOCH 1835 in the rhithron of Rohrwiesenbach and partly also of Breitenbach (Schlitz, Hessen, West Germany) were studied in 1974 and 1975. The animals develop mainly in the uppermost portions of hyporheic interstitial waters. The amount of nutrients contained in the sediment of both streams is correlated with the particle size of the sediments and, together with current conditions of the epigaeic stream water and the oxygen content within the sediments, determins habitat selection and abundance of juveniles. Presence of the species in the rhithron despite losses through drift is insured by upstream migration, mainly of adults, and the preference of juvenile specimens for habitats in interstitial waters that are protected from the current.
