Abstract
Ephemeroptera caught in emergence traps on 2 very different types of streams in Lower Austria during the period 1972-1977 were studied. The communities are described, abundance and fluctuation of the species is discussed and the weights (organic dry matter) are indicated. Results are compared and combined with those of Plecoptera and Trichoptera. A typical composition of dominant stream insects becomes evident. The total weight of emergence of all 3 orders of insects ranges from 2-5 g (respectively 12-30 kcal/m2). A rough estimate of the total yearly yield of emergence (including the hitherto unknown fraction of Diptera) reaches a level of 5-15 g (30-90 kcal)/m2.
