Abstract
Five new species of Thaumaleidae (Diptera) collected by Malicky (Lunz, Lower Austria) in the Mediterranean area are described: Thaumalea kykladica, T. minuta, T. lesbica, T. chiosica and T. ikariae. Two more species, 1 from Cyprus and 1 from Crete, were represented only by females. Further information is given on the morphology of T. malickyi Theischinger and on the distribution of T. bezzii Edwards. The Cycladic and the Sporadic island have been colonized by completely different species. This seems to depend on the geologic history of the area and the reduced possibility for Thaumaleidae to expand, caused by their extreme ecological demands. Protothaumalea algira Vaillant is new to Europe (Mallorca). Further faunistical data on T. pyrenaica Edwards are presented.
