Abstract
The kinetics of phase separation of a binary mixture of water and 2-butoxy ethanol is investigated microcalorimetrically and optically. This fluid has a lower critical point. Surprisingly, when inducing the phase separation by constant heating the mixtures can show pronounced oscillations in the apparent specific heat and the turbidity, i.e., they show cascade nucleation. The oscillations appear after an incubation time of the order of 30-50 min, and their period Deltat decreases with the heating rate nu(s) as Deltat similar to nu(s) (-0.32+/- 0.03).
