Abstract:
We create a granular gas composed of table tennis balls, and study their behaviour
when being shaken vertically. Using techniques of digital particle image velocimetry
(DPIV), the two-dimensional velocity distribution and anisotropy of temperature
is of particular interest. A high speed camera is set up and supplied with enough
lighting to illuminate balls moving at the order of metres per second (ms−1). A
shaker provides vertical movement and different structured ground plates are used
in order to excite the particles equally in all directions. The images are processed
by a routine implemented in Matlab. We find that the velocity distribution is both
dependent on the structure of the ground plate and the observed position in the
container.
