Abstract:
Ecological aspects for five amphibian species occurring on Sao Tome are described. The results were obtained, on one hand, from field studies, on the other hand, from captivity observations. Data for all Gymnophiona species found by the author on Sao Tome are sampled under the taxon Schistometopum "thomense". The number of species on Sao Tome is compared with that of the West African mainland. Possibilities for the colonization and speciation of the genus Nesionixalus endemic for Sao Tome and Principe are discussed.
