Abstract: In this contribution we aim to provide a very brief introduction to some of the work that has been done over the last 50 years on the problem of trying to understand the dynamics of space-time close to a cosmological singularity. Starting with the pioneering work of BKL, we move on to outline how their early work has more recently led to surprising connections with the theory of Kac-Moody algebras. We will discuss the stimulus these developments have had for the problem of quantising gravity.
