Abstract: The first experiment is described in which the nuclear spins of an organic molecule are pumped by exciting the spin-forbidden phononless singlet—triplet transition with a narrow-band laser. Irradiation of the sample with an additional rf field enabled high-precision direct optical determination of the 14N quadrupole tensor in the ground state of phenazine-h8 in a phenazine-d8 host crystal.
