 Abstract: We investigate several aspects of the embedding of gauged N = 8 supergravity into d = 11 supergravity and give the full nonlinear metric ansatz for this embedding. This allows us to rederive the solutions with SO(7)± and SU(4)− symmetry directly from the critical points of the d = 4 theory as well as a new solution with G2 invariance and N = 1 supersymmetry. We discuss the geometrical aspects of our results and their implications for the interpretation of spontaneously broken solutions.
