Abstract: Tungsten monocarbide (WC) obtained via urea glass route showed a high activity as well as chemoselectivity for the continuous flow reduction of a variety of nitro groups under milder conditions, compared to previous reports. The favorable effect of the nanostructure was shown by comparison to other commercial WC species. Moreover, WC functioned as an efficient support for nickel nanoparticles, expanding its range of applicability and leading to a bimetallic Ni@WC composite characterized by high activity for the hydrogenation of cardanol, a phenolic lipid obtained from cashew nutshells.
