Abstract: Although the oxidation of sulfur dioxide is a very well developed process, novel demands, such as highly concentrated SO2-streams, require novel catalysts which can tolerate higher sulfurdioxide concentrations and higher temperatures than the conventional vanadia based catalysts. Fe modified catalysts can be used in this reaction. Their basic activity is lower than that of the vanadia catalysts, however, they tolerate the more severe conditions. The best type of support proved to be mesoporous oxides, such as MCM-41. They show the highest activity and also long term stability. A pilot plant based on iron catalysts is under operation.
