 Abstract: The monitoring of total gaseous Hg (TGM) was established at the Cape Point Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) station in September 1995. This paper presents the first data obtained until June 1999. Atmospheric Hg concentrations were found to be fairly homogeneous fluctuating between 1.2-1.4 ngm(-3). Whilst no significant diurnal variation is detectable, a slight seasonal variation with a TGM minimum in March-May and maximum in June- August was observed. A minimum annual TGM concentration was detected in 1997, 1 year later than observed at the Wank summit in the Northern Hemisphere (NH). The Cape Point GAW station was found to constitute a suitable site for monitoring TGM concentrations in the Southern Hemisphere (SH). (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
