Abstract: In a one-pot reaction, aldononitriles can be synthesized smoothly from glycosyl azides by successive treatment with N-bromosuccinimide (NBS) and activated metals M* [Eq. (a)]. By the correct choice of the reducing agent, the intermediate alcoholate can be trapped with electrophiles.
