Zusammenfassung: The ability to generate transgenic plants has been extensively applied in the study of potato tuber metabolism. All the major pathways, including many of the steps of carbohydrate metabolism have now been investigated by metabolic engineering strategies. The wide range of results that has been achieved, ranging from the insignificant to the dramatic, is reviewed in this article. It is concluded that a better knowledge of the interaction between metabolism and gene expression is required before transgenic approaches can be developed that lead to significant yield increases.
