 Abstract: Spatial cognition research is making rapid progress in understanding the acquisition, organization, utilization, and revision of knowledge about spatial environments, be it real or abstract, human or machine. Much of the success would have been impossible without a combination of methods and approaches from AI and cognitive psychology. This article describes current interdisciplinary spatial cognition research in Germany. In addition it presents a prognosis: The understanding of the cognitive and computational correlates underlying spatial cognition will soon reach a level where the integration and development of efficient multifunctional spatial assistance systems will become feasible
