Zusammenfassung: This study explores the combination stereo and motion cues to depth by investigating whether the perceived depth order of two dots could be reversed as a function of surrounding stimulus information. Observers indicated which of two dots presented within a 3-D structure appears closer. The results indicate different depth order for different surrounding conditions. This finding is consistent with the predictions of the intrinsic constraint (IC) model, according to which the visual system uses the linear relation between horizontal disparity and motion of the points of a rigidly rotating object (identifying the IC line) to compute depth. Points that have a ratio between velocity and disparity that is different from the ratio of these signals from the surrounding points are considered as noisy perturbation of their projection on the IC line. Their depth is determined by projecting them on the IC line, and it is, therefore, affected by the surrounding structure.
