Abstract: The wealth of data available in the earth sciences is underutilised due to the absence of continuous digital workflows. The emergence of standardised web services for geospatial data, sensor network integration and grid technology now offer tools for the creation of such workflows, orchestrated by workflow engines. The creation of continuous digital workflows enables us to create new tools for global collaboration in the earth sciences by integrating the acquisition of data and metadata, and their subsequent processing, modelling and dissemination.
