 Abstract: The surface structure of the HPI layer of Dienococcus radiodurans is determined by metal shadowing. Particular attention is paid to the effects exerted on this structure by dehydration. Comparison of air-dried and freeze-dried preparations allows a phenomenological description of the dehydration artefacts. Analysis with correlation techniques reveals that apart from systematic effects (like a flattening of the structure) unprotected drying increases structural heterogeneity. (14 References).
