Abstract: The principles of surface reconstruction from micrographs of unidirectionally shadowed periodic specimens are outlined. The reconstruction as described here is effected by Fourier space filtration. Complications such as decoration effects interfering with true shadowing, shadows and inclination of the crystals are taken into consideration, and strategies to cope with these problems are presented. Particular attention is paid to the exploitation of specimen symmetries and the height scaling of the reliefs.
