Abstract:
Information services for scientists have been provided within most research organizations and academic institutions for more than two decades. With the age of the Internet the situation for scientists has, however, changed dramatically. Seemingly unlimited amounts of information have become readily accessible from the desktop. Problems that scientists now often face include: locating the most reliable information resource, performing an effective search within that resource, and managing the amounts of information received from the various resources used. Problems with which the providers of information services have been dealing with professionally for many years - even before the Internet. Based on experience gained within the Max Planck Society and the observations of developments elsewhere, the perspectives for information management services for scientists will be discussed.
