Abstract: (from the create) This book is dedicated to Elizabeth Bates by her many colleagues and friends. Her bibliography spans three decades of intense activity in the sciences of the mind: 1973-2003. Through this period, Liz was a pioneer in so many different areas of developmental psycholinguistics it is difficult to know where to start. She took a "many-perspectives" view of children's acquisition of language and made significant contributions from virtually all of these perspectives. In this volume some of Elizabeth Bates's colleagues and collaborators provide up-to-date reviews of these and other areas of research in an attempt to continue in the directions in which she pointed us. The volume also contains a list of her many important publications, as well as some personal reflections of some of the contributors, noting ways in which she made a difference in their lives. In this introduction we provide a brief overview of Bates's scientific history by focusing on the major books she produced, either singly or, as is most often the case, with many important co-authors.
