Abstract: Searches for gravitational waves from binary neutron stars or sub-solar mass black holes by the LIGO Scientific Collaboration use the findchirp algorithm: an implementation of standard matched filter techniques with innovations to improve performance on detector data that has non-stationary and non-Gaussian artifacts. We provide details on the methods used in the findchirp algorithm and describe some future improvements.
