 Abstract: New ecological concepts were developed in the last years permitting better ecotoxicological prognoses than the energy flow concepts. The processes determining structures and changes of communities are discussed. In the aquatic ecology, the size-efficiency hypothesis and the resource-ratio concept were particularly successful in forecasting community structures. The control of aquatic communities "bottom up" via resource availability and reproduction, or "top down" is described. By exemplary tests carried out with pesticides it is demonstrated that the possibilities of forecasting (indirect) effects may be improved by using mechanistic models. Since terms as stability, diversity and energy flow efficiency are hardly appropriate as test parameters, the evaluation of effects on ecosystems will result in an evaluation of function and structure of the food web.
