Abstract: Daphnia lumholtzi is known to develop long helmets. In this study I show that helmet growth can be induced by chemical substances released by fish. Additionally size at first reproduction is lower in the presence of fish chemicals. This is the first report of the induction of cyclomorphosis in Daphnia by fish chemicals. Since D. lumholtzi often coexists with planktivorous fish these results suggest that morphological changes in D. lumholtzi evolved as protection against fish predation.
