Abstract: A new species of the Gymnodiniaceae (Dinophyceae) is described from two hypertrophic shallow lakes in East Holstein, Germany. Katodinium fastigatum spec. nov. is a phagotrophic dinoflagellate feeding on phytoplankton. Vegetative multiplication is by formation of 4 or 8 zoospores in a nonmotile stage, a mode of reproduction new for the genus Katodinium. Differences to other species of Katodinium are discussed.
