Abstract: During the last decades the spread of different native plants was observed by ranchers in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso. This led to speculations about profound changes in environmental parameters and concerns of ranchers about the loss of pasture area. Vochysia divergens, locally called Cambará, is a common tree in the Pantanal of Mato Grosso that is considered an invasive plant in the pastures of the Pantal of Poconé. This study indicates that wet conditions and periodic flooding favor seed production, seedling establishment and seedling growth of the species. Heavy drought and wild fires lead to increased tree mortality and reduced seed production. These results indicate that pluriannual changes of dry and wet conditions in the Pantanal are the reason for the strong dynamics in population development of V. divergens. Sufficient rainfall, floods and low wild fire frequency during the last 30 years favored the spread of V. divergens. We postulate a reduction of the stands during the next pluriannual dry period
