Abstract
A brook-system with tributaries containing only either G. fossarum or G. pulex, as well as brooks with mixed populations of both species, were investigated. From the distribution of G. pulex in space and time in brooks with mixed populations, it wa concluded that current velocity and minimum temperature, are the most important factors limiting this species in the "metarhithral". G. fossarum, on the other hand, can stay in fast-flowing water even when temperatures are near freezing point, which makes it an animal of the "epirhithral". G. roeseli can only slightly penetrate into the "hyporhithral". The distribution of these Gammarus-species in running waters of Europe is discussed.
