Abstract
All the peritricha found in groundwater samples from the Fulda valley proved to be new species, which are described here. They show adaptations to the interstitial groundwater biotope, which were partly unknown. Suggestions were made for a new division within the genus Scyphidia. In the laboratory two of the species were very sensitive to water pollutions. Accordingly they are limited to areas of very pure groundwater.
Summary
In a first investigation of the Peritricha fauna of unpolluted groundwater in the Fulda valley only new species were found. These were described as Epistylis subterranea, n. sp., Scyphidia husmanni, n. sp. and Cothurnia ruthae n. sp. The new Peritricha proved to be adapted to the interstitial groundwater biotope. They fix themselves upon particles of detritus and sand, are very sensitive to organic pollution, and two least, are cold stenotherms. A repeated use of the same cyst by Epistylis subterranea was observed. Scyphidia husmanni is a new operculariform scyphidiid. By the establishment of the group of operculariform Scyphidiidae, Scyphidia limacina, Scyphidia husmanni and Scyphidia dentata could be separated from the other representatives of the genus. In the investigated biotope ciliates were scarce.
