Abstract: Summary In the investigated alpine and boreal groundwater no "typical borealpine" species (sensu Thienemann 1950) were found. Here only "boreoalpine organisms in a wider sense" are living, which moreover exist in subterranean biotopes and in moss in the intermediate region between Alps and Scandinavian mountains. This distribution way may be understood by the fact that groundwater organisms, which are adapted to cold water could find corresponding thermic conditions in the intermediate region only in deep-groundwater and in the stygorhithral groundwater in highlands, moreover in cool sources and in the border zones of nothern and southern glaciers. Therefore coldwater organisms in the intermediate region could outlast the postglacial warm time in groundwater.
