Abstract: Sumatra and Java are inhabited by a distinct fauna of shared or closely related species of Neoperla belonging to several phyletic lines. Of the 19 named species, 16 occur on Sumatra, 9 on Java. The fauna appears to be of mainland origin with probable relatives in South India. Limited recent faunal exchange is indicated by presence of three of the species on the Malayan Peninsula. The most expansive species, N. fallax , extends to North Thailand. In the east, several species reach Bali or even Lombok. A number of literature records of Sumatran or Javan Neoperla from other parts of Asia were based on misidentified specimens. Known stonefly habitats in Sumatra and Java are on or along the volcanic mountain belt surrounding the Sunda Plate in the west.
