Abstract: 1972 emergence figures of Chironomidae (Insecta, Diptera, Nematocera) of two Austrian streams were determined using the greenhouse method (Illies 1971). "Schreierbach" and "Teichbach", the streams under investigation, differ considerably with regard to their biotic and abiotic environmental conditions. A total of 138 species was collected, 9 of them new to Austria, some of them even new to the whole alpine region. Details on systematics as well as autecological and phenological characteristics are presented for all species involved. In Schreierbach 89 species comprised 14.951 individuals/m² and an emergence biomass of 2,923 g/m² corresponding to about 50% of the total insect emergence in 1972. In Teichbach 114 species comprised 11.502 ind./m², resp. 1,914 g/m², corresponding to approximately 20% of the total insect emergence.
