Abstract: During summer 1980 investigations were carried out on the bacterial biomass and its glucose uptake kinetics in the flowing water of two small streams in the Kaufunger Wald (Hesse, Federal Republic of Germany). pH values of the Wengebach were near neutral (about 6.7) whereas the Endschlagbach is more acidic (pH about 4.3 - 4.6). The numbers of bacteria, their biomass, proportions of morphologically different groups and mean cell volumes (measured by epifluorescence microscopy) are within the usual range for similar, non-acidified streams in Eastern Hesse. The glucose uptake potential in the Wengebach is also normal, whereas in the Endschlagbach this parameter is considerably lower probably due to the low pH.
