Abstract: Abstract A first estimate of annual bacterial production on the basis of bacterial biomass and heterotrophic bacterial activity was made for the Breitenbach, a small open grassland stream in Central Europe. A surprisingly high value of 750 g C/m2/year was calculated, suggesting that the bacteria may contribute significantly to the nutrition of primary consumers in the Breitenbach.
