 Abstract: An osmotic gradient existed between river water and cocoon fluid in Rhyacophila fasciata Hagen pupae. The osmotic concentration was 4-8 mOsmol/l in the cocoon fluid and 2 mOsmol/l in the river water. Because of the gradient of osmotic tension (s = π* -p), water was forced into the cocoon until the osmotic pressure (π*) equalled the turgor pressure (p) of the cocoon membrane (π* = p; s = O). This hyperosmosis in the cocoon fluid was effected by the semipermeability of the cocoon membrane, which always kept the cocoon at its maximum volume.
