Abstract: Methodological advancements had important impact on our science in the past. The advantages and shortcomings of the new molecular methods (a collective term here used for various approaches, from allozyme assays to nucleotide sequencing) widely available at the start of our millennium are discussed, with emphasis on distinctions of taxa on the one hand and on study of phylogenetic relationships between taxa on the other hand. A brief list of suggested research topics that could be addressed with conventional methods is also presented.
