Abstract:
Surface plasmon polaritons on thin Ag films are imaged using a simple apertureless scanning nearfield optical microscope based on a scanning-tunneling-microscope setup. The surface plasmons are excited in the Kretschmann configuration using He-Ne-laser radiation at 633 nm. The reflection of surface plasmons from differently shaped surface steps is investigated by studying the interference patterns formed by the incident and reflected waves. Reflection from rising and falling steps is compared, and reflection coefficients are determined. Plasmon reflection from a corner mirror and focusing from a concave mirror are demonstrated.
